## Luther College | Gerdin Fieldhouse Renovation | Decorah, Iowa

When Luther College set out to renovate Gerdin Fieldhouse, they knew the project was never going to be just a simple refresh. The college had a vision that extended across the entire facility, including a sweeping transformation of the Fieldhouse entrance, gymnasium, offices, athletic spaces, and, at the heart of it all, the locker rooms.

With 18 locker rooms to outfit and nearly 700 athletes, coaches, officials, and staff to serve, the locker room portion of this project represented one of the most complex college athletic storage challenges a single renovation could present.

Considering the scale of this project, finding the right partner for locker equipment and storage was not just a matter of blindly choosing a partner from a list. Luther College needed a manufacturer that could ensure flexibility, consistency, and quality across a significant number of spaces, each with its own specifications, users, and functional requirements. The partner they chose was GearGrid.

## A Renovation Meant to Last

The Gerdin Fieldhouse renovation represented a major investment in the future of Luther College Athletics. The goal was to modernize an aging facility and create spaces that could serve the college’s athletic programs long into the future. Luther College knew that these spaces would reflect the pride and commitment of a Division Three program dedicated to its student-athletes.

The locker rooms were a critical piece of that vision. For coaches, staff, and officials, having reliable and organized storage was a baseline necessity. For student-athletes, the locker room is more than a place to store their gear and belongings; it is a place where teams come together before a competition and to decompress afterward. Getting the locker rooms right was of serious importance, and Luther College approached that project accordingly.

## The Challenge: One Solution Across 18 Different Spaces

With 18 locker rooms throughout the renovated Fieldhouse, uniformity was never the primary goal. Instead, Luther College prioritized adaptability. Different spaces had different footprints, just as different programs have different storage needs. A football locker room has different needs than a tennis locker room, and a shared officials’ space has different requirements than a dedicated coaching staff suite.

The solution to the adaptability challenge was to work across all of them without giving up cohesion. Luther College and its architectural team, RDG, wanted locker rooms that felt like a part of the same facility, a consistent visual and functional identity throughout everything, while still giving each individual space the configuration necessary to function well for its specific users.

That kind of flexibility isn’t something every locker manufacturer can deliver. It requires a product line that is broad enough to accommodate all of the different locker styles, sizes, and layouts, as well as a team experienced enough to help adapt those variables into a completed vision for Luther College.

## The GearGrid Solution

By collaborating with Luther College and RDG, GearGrid supplied 693 lockers across all 18 locker rooms within the renovated Gerdin Fieldhouse. The project drew on two of GearGrid’s core athletic locker systems, the [Single-Tier Locker](https://www.geargrid.com/product/standard-athletics-wall-mount-lockers/) and the [GridIron Team Locker](https://www.geargrid.com/product/wall-mount-gridiron-team-lockers/), in both 24-inch and 30-inch widths. These lockers gave the design team the range necessary to match each space properly.

GridIron Team Lockers were configured in a combination of [wall mounted](https://www.geargrid.com/product/wall-mount-gridiron-team-lockers/) and [freestanding island](https://www.geargrid.com/product/gridiron-team-freestanding-lockers/) arrangements, depending on the layout of each room. This kind of flexibility allowed the locker design to respond to the architecture of each space instead of forcing each room into the same footprint.

Custom finishes and materials were specified throughout the project, including:

- Laminate back panels

- Laminate footlocker panels

- Custom powder coat finish

- HDPE seats

- HDPE shelves

These selections gave the locker rooms a polished and high-end appearance that was consistent with the broader renovation, while ensuring the durability necessary to hold up to daily use in a busy collegiate athletic program, creating a locker room environment that remains cohesive across rooms while remaining functionally tailored to each space.

## Built for Every Team on Campus

The scope of the Gerdin Fieldhouse renovation wasn’t limited to a handful of high-profile programs. GearGrid’s locker systems now serve the full breadth of Luther College’s athletic community, including:

- Football

- Men’s and women’s basketball

- Men’s and women’s soccer

- Men’s and women’s wrestling

- Tennis

- Track and field

- Volleyball

- Softball

- Baseball

- Officials and staff

That list tells its own story. GearGrid wasn’t delivering a single locker room for a single program. They needed a solution that could work for a linebacker as well as a tennis player, for a head coach as well as a visiting official.

## The Results

When the renovated Gerdin Fieldhouse opened its doors, Luther College had a facility that matched the ambition of the project from the beginning. The locker rooms, spanning 18 spaces and nearly 700 units, were a vital part of that transformation, updated, modern, and built to serve the college’s athletic community at every level.

Luther College has expressed that they are very pleased with how the Gerdin Fieldhouse renovation turned out. A project of this complexity, with 18 locker rooms, multiple locker styles and configurations, custom finishes, and a full facility installation managed by GearGrid’s own installation team, reflects what GearGrid has built its reputation on: the ability to deliver at scale without compromising quality.

From football to tennis, from wall mount to island configuration, from 24-inch to 30-inch, one system adapted for every team, across every room in the house.
